Happiness in a drawing
Metaphor for life
I came up with this trio over my daily digital drawings this month. It was spontaneous and fun and it stuck. The following are 10 digital and colored pencil drawings.
What have I been up to creatively lately? I dove into digital drawing this month and have had a blast finding various color combinations and brushes I love. I set no parameters for myself, just draw. Just sit down and draw. Actually, it became a motto and hashtag for me…just keep drawing. It sounds so simple, but to actually sit can be such a gift on the busy days. Turns out, I started finding myself looking forward to this drawing time every chance I got and became more comfortable with drawing on the iPad.
How did I decide what to draw? Some days I found my thoughts going to what I know I can draw like flowers or objects. Then other days I found my thoughts wanting to be adventurous or challenged to see what would happen. Then other times, I wanted to try to capture a feeling that I have felt looking at other artists work. And other times, it was just random or weird, even silly. Many ideas came up as I was drawing and variations came to my mind. Making decisions every step of the way to finishing a digital sketchbook page became the hardest part!
Why did I do this? I am always trying to do something creative everyday. I thought about the iPad and how I need to learn more on procreate and practice to get better at the digital side of art making. I decided to try creating a digital drawing randomly daily with no rules and share it on instagram and Facebook.
I divided the finished drawings into categories to help me see what I draw frequently and other relevant data I could pull from them. Check them out:

This month’s cards
I had a fun time printing some of my digital drawings to make a few cards this month. The thank you card was hand drawn. It’s a whole other level having my digital drawings printed and glued down for my cards. Always more to learn, but so exciting!!
A Little Pumpkin Patch
A fun activity to help our visual art students practice their hand building techniques this time of year is pumpkin making. Pumpkins are fun and make a great entry point for students with little to no clay experience. The pumpkin portion helps students learn about making pinch pots and the stems make for good coil practice. These pumpkins are also excellent for testing out glaze combinations. For this patch, I experimented with crystaltex color combinations and underglazes without a final clear coat.
It’s Pumpkin Time!
It’s been a month of learning new skills, teaching some solid clay techniques and experimenting too. I love the month of October and it is kind of hard to see it go. But like always…just keep drawing!
Stay creative out there~
