The Yellow Finch Story
Here is a little story to share….
There once was a dreamer who dreamed of beautiful flowers growing in her garden. She was a novice and had many failed attempts before. She was frustrated and unsure what she was doing wrong. But she decided to give it one more try and finally her dream came true. This gardener had many flowers and blooms and they were lovely and made her so happy.
She would walk her little piece of the earth and take in all the tiny details of each bloom and track the patterns and organic shapes she saw. It became a peaceful place, a place where she could relax and be with nature. She lived happily for many years as her garden grew. She would attempt to grow different flowers and even though she did not succeed every time with every seed, she had enough sown from years before, that her garden grew slowly and flowers came on their own.
She had many critters and small visitors to her garden. Some caterpillars that really loved her parsley. A few hummingbirds that fought over the most colorful flowers. She even had a few butterflies that would happily flap their wings and travel to each flower.
Then one day, she caught a glimpse of a bright yellow bird.
This made the gardener so happy to see such a brightly colored visitor in her garden. A yellow finch. But soon she realized this beautiful bird only wants one thing. Seeds. There was only one problem with this particular visitor; this yellow finch wants the seeds inside the flowers. The gardener quickly noticed all the brightly colored petals on the ground each morning. It did not take long for the gardener to catch the yellow finch in her garden plucking away at her beautiful blooms. And then a few more yellow finches came and even their mates. Flowers were being picked apart. The gardener found herself in a quandary.
She loved her flowers and she loved her bird visitors yet she wanted to keep the flowers in bloom as long as possible. The gardener tried to lure the yellow finches to nearby bird seed but quickly realized the birds were not interested and maybe even thought nothing is better than freshly grown seeds plucked from the source.
The gardener could respect that. The gardener was stumped and didn’t know what to do with this problem. She fussed and complained, yet when she caught them in the act, their bright color was a sight to behold.
Finally, the gardener quickly saw this was not something to fix, but rather something to accept. The gardener began to see things differently and planted more seeds to get even more blooms. So when the finches came, they pluck some flowers completely while others they leave alone. Now, the gardener surveyed her garden and saw everyone and everything was happy except, of course, the hummingbirds.
The End

The month of August is an exciting time with school back in session and all the activities that come with new classes, new students and new ideas for class projects swirling in my head. This idea of blogging about the yellow finches was a seed of an idea that I wasn’t sure I could bring out fully. But thankfully I stuck with it and now have a fun, little silly story and some creative exploration of bird drawings and paintings to share. I hope you found some enjoyment out of it too.
Stay creative~
